Brake problems can develop over time due to old or damaged components, and this can make driving dangerous. As your INFINITI dealership, we’d like to tell you about some of the types of brake repairs we provide.

Brake Repairs: 3 Examples of Services Available at Your INFINITI Dealership

Brake Pad Replacement

Brake pads play a vital role in the braking system, as they generate the friction that stops your wheels. They’re installed in the calipers, which are positioned above the wheel rotors, and are forced against the rotors when the brakes are applied. Their rough material coverings produce this friction, but these coverings slowly wear thin over time.

When a brake pad has worn down, a metal spike buried in the material during its manufacture becomes visible, and it will scratch against the rotor when you hit the brakes. This produces a high-pitched screeching noise. Worn pads reduce braking efficiency as they take longer to stop your wheels, and this can cause an accident. We can replace any worn pads within minutes to fix this issue.

Rotor Resurfacing

The rotors are the flat disks positioned behind each wheel hub. They have smooth surfaces to enable the calipers to grip them easily, as we saw above. As time passes, their surfaces can become irregular due to rust, the buildup of dried adhesive from the pads, which can liquefy due to the heat produced by friction, or other issues.

If a caliper grabs an irregularly surfaced rotor, it produces vibrations that you’ll feel through the pedal. Our technicians repair this problem by resurfacing them using a specialized machine that removes the top layers of the metal to turn the rotors smooth again. Resurfacing can usually be performed once or twice during a rotor’s lifespan, depending on its thickness. If a rotor is too thin, we’ll replace it.

Brake Bleeding

Brake fluid provides the hydraulic power that forces the brakes to work. In time, air can enter the braking system, forming bubbles that block the fluid’s flow. This is dangerous, as these bubbles can prevent the calipers from engaging, and your brakes could fail. Brake bleeding fixes this problem by removing the trapped air.

This process involves topping up the fluid in the brake master cylinder, then attaching a vacuum bleeder to the bleeder valve of the caliper furthest from the cylinder. This machine drains fluid and air until there are no bubbles in the fluid. The bleeder valve is then closed, and the process is repeated on the other three calipers. The fluid level in the cylinder is also monitored and replenished as necessary.
